Can you walk me through the J-1 process?

Here are the main steps in the J-1 application process: You need to determine which category under the J-1 visa program you fall in. You need to work with a sponsor licensed by the US Department of Foreign Affairs to accept you into their exchange visitor program. The sponsor issues you the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status (also known as the DS-2019). Pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) I-901 fee. Submit your application to the US embassy along with the required documents (DS-2019, DS-7002, DS-160, valid passport and 2×2 photograph among others). Go for an interview with the US Embassy. There is no need to be overwhelmed with the steps and documentary requirements. Grant Visa Consultancy is able to assist you in this regard.

The speed of the entire process largely depends on how fast you can get your requirements and correctly accomplish required forms. That said, it approximately takes 8 to 10 weeks to apply for a J-1 visa. Other factors outside your control may affect the processing time, like changes in regulations pertaining to the J-1 program.

What questions should I expect during my interview at the US embassy?

Questions during the interview vary depending on the visa officer but it is safe to assume that these will revolve around your family, education background, employment experience, financial capacity and how familiar you are with the program you are applying for. The most important things to remember for interviews with the embassy are to be truthful and accurate. Keep your answers relevant to the questions asked and make a good impression by making sure you know about the J-1 program you are applying for and demonstrate your intent to return to the Philippines after your program.

Is my entry to the US guaranteed under the J-1 program?

No. The discretion on whether or not to approve your application rests on the US Embassy. Can I work when I get to the US under the J-1 visa program?

Yes, you may; but a J-1 visa holder is only allowed to engage in activities listed in his or her DS-2019 form and as stated on the specific category of the exchange program he or she applied for.

Can I bring my family members to the US if I get a J-1 visa?

It depends. A J-2 visa may be issued to a J-1 visa holder’s spouse and dependents (unmarried children under the age of 21). However, there are specific categories under the J-1 visa program that do not permit the issuance of a J-2 visa. These include categories like au pair, camp counselor, secondary school student and summer and work travel. Those given J-2 visas may stay in the US for as long as the J-1 visa holder has valid J-1 status.
